Crystal Cortez is a sound, installation artist & programmer based out of Portland Oregon. Under their performance moniker Crystal Quartez they transform field recordings, use synthesis, audio programming, data sonification, and 3D spatialization to further animate their world with sound.
Their practice involves the development of interactive sculptural interfaces and wearable technology. They are a full time audio environment designer for Meow wolf, and are also an educator and max certified trainer. their teaching work focuses on the empowerment of underserved populations gaining access and knowledge around creative technology. In 2019 they co founded whateverSpace, a maker space offering free and sliding scale workshops and technology rentals with priority going to the BIPOC community.
Their art has been shown at /Slash (SF), NIME (london), La MaMa (NYC), PNCA, Disjecta, PICA (PDX), Navel (LA), On the Boards (Sea) and more.
